Lua: setting meta __lt does not work as I want

This is my first question to this incredible community.

These days I am writing a Lua module for myself. Here is the minimal piece of code with the problem

If you run this little script, you will see that when I use the bf.compare function directly, I have what I need. When I use bf.compare through a metamethod, it gives me only a β€œscalar” true value.

Any suggestion?

The Lua manual specifies this pseudo code for __lt metamethod:
