Can anyone suggest a place to start javascript touch events for the web?

I would like to learn how to create image galleries and content sliders that can support both touch and mouse events. What is a good place to start learning about touch events?

I can not find the official documentation.

Are there any useful touch libraries supported through jQuery that normalize api?
