What is the consequence of rejecting the version of the Maven plugin?

I'm in the process of resurrecting an old Maven project. Some / most of the dependencies of the Maven plugin were configured without a version. Beyond the warning, what are the consequences of this? Will Maven try to find the latest version and thereby increase build time?

Yes, when the version is omitted, maven tries to find and use the latest version. It was a poor design choice, but not because of build time (I think it caches plugins and only updates them from time to time).
