Android app certificate extension after expiration

I recently saw this:

If any of my applications survive (and I survive and everything else depends on survives) before 2037, should my applications be reissued with a new package name due to the need to obtain a new certificate?

Is there a way to renew the certificate?

No, you cannot renew an existing certificate.

However, the first time you create a certificate, set the validity period until you think that the product will remain. See here for instructions on how to do this.
