Is it possible to read the signal quality from GSM / CDMA modems when connected?

I know that I can communicate with GSM / CDMA modems using AT commands. However, as far as I know, this does not work when connected - is there a way to read status information (signal strength, GSM / HSDPA mode, etc.) when connected?

I am not sure if modemmanager will give out information, I tried it with a Nokia phone, and this is not so. However, I would like it to be mainly for Qualcomm (Huawei) chipset modems, does anyone have any experience reading real-time signal information from these modems?
