PHP EDI X12 Parsing

Question

I have a project to implement an EDI solution in an existing website like e-commerce. There are only three EDI documents and only one company for file transfers. They have strictly defined X12 documents and will be responsible for all GET / PUT to the FTP site. These three documents are Inventory Consultation (inbound), Delivery Notification (inbound) and Invoice (outbound).

We do not want / need to implement a full-blown EDI management solution. I wonder if I dare to think that this is a relatively simple parsing task using PHP? Does anyone know of any existing PHP libraries that might be useful (maybe X12 for XML)? My searches were empty. I would like to start work on my own if this is a realistic goal and there are no other resources.

The Oakland Data Transformer designer is free, and it allows you to really understand the structure of the X12 document in the context of your sample document. You will need to contact Oakland Software support to obtain the required EDI definitions.
