Removing Deserialization of Empty XML Element Using XStream

In the XML stream that I get, I have the following statement

<user>
    <age/>
</user>

which should be inserted into an object that looks like this:

@XStreamAlias("user")
public class User {

    public int age = 0;
}

Unfortunately, I get XStream exceptions every time I try to read this XML, because the age xml tag is empty:

How can I tell XStream that this field is "optional" or "impossible to contain anything"?

Unfortunately, this is not as easy as it could be. There are two ways to do this:

  • Write the transform using xslt and apply it to the stream before reading it using XStream so that the xml matches your Java Beans or
  • JavaBeanConverter XStream. , , XML Java Beans. , JavaBeanConverter XStream .
