XNA might be a good choice, but I switched to SlimDX pricing due to some limitations related to Microsoft's limitations on online gaming services that I saw early on. This made me think that there would be other restrictions that I could not get around. In addition, I was interested in more flexibility in performance and better real-time effects than I thought XNA could provide. I would be interested in other thoughts about whether such concerns about XNA are based. Perhaps this is not a problem for your stress visualization project.
