Set up a site on Amazon EC2 with mysql

I have a new website that is managed by Joomla and contains many custom applications that depend on the Mysql database. All of this is hosted on Amazon EC2 with the root device being EBS.

My problem is with my Mysql setup. I installed a mysql server with significant default settings (other than cleaning the security system).

My question is should I configure Mysql to work on a separate EBS volume: http://aws.amazon.com/articles/1663 , or should I even look at Amazon RDS: http://aws.amazon.com/ rds / mysql / ?

Both of these seem redundant for my launch right now with 0 users. I obviously want to make sure that I am active if it grows, but I don’t know if it will be a big pain to add them later?

I would definitely say that you must configure MySQL to work on a different EBS volume for many reasons. Here are a few:

  • Easier backup. You can take a snapshot of the entire volume of EBS, instead of dumping MySQL and pushing it to S3. When you have a snapshot of the volume, you can restore your database much faster than with a MySQL dump.
