Improving validation speed from git (from github)

Question

I use git and TeamCity v6.0 on a Windows environment.

I just switched from server-side validation to agent validation due to IO issues, however ...

Initial verification became slower from ~ minutes to> 45 minutes. Once the repo is cloned, everything is fine. Is there some kind of agent configuration that I can configure to improve this? Thanks for any answers in advance.

I see the git source files created on the agent, and then a very long pause, and then I get all my data. It can be seen from the process explorer that git seems to do very little, and there is no obvious source of throttling.
