Stream and direct access to Fortran

I realized that I can emulate access to a stream in the compiler without it, using a file with direct character access.
Are there any problems or portability issues that I should be aware of?
My program is working fine.

I found that files with direct access are sometimes used for this purpose. Example: binstreams library in FLIBS. Issues related to this approach are also described in the implementation notes . This approach may be convenient, as sometimes the latest compilers do not appear on the latest HPC computers.
