Exponent in plotmath expression

Question

I would like to have the following, for example in the ggplot2 label:

ylab(expression((hat(beta)^(2))(x)))

but without parentheses around hat(beta)^(2). But if I remove the parentheses, it (x)will correspond exponentially.

Is there a grouping in these expressions? Or invisible parentheses?
