How to force MediaWiki to observe separate line breaks?

By default, MediaWiki ignores single line breaks, treating them as one space. To insert a new row on the page, you must insert in it two consecutive line breaks in the source, leading to a new paragraph: </p><p>. It is also possible to paste <br />directly into the source code.

How can I change the parsing mechanism of MediaWiki so that line breaks in the source are automatically replaced <br />in the resulting HTML?
