Recommended approach for uploading your own binary image file to NSImage?

I have a bunch of native binary image files that I want to upload to NSImages. The format is not a simple bitmap, but rather a RLE view mixed with transparency and various additional information.

To display one of these images in a Cocoa application, I need a way to parse the byte of the image file by the byte and “compute” the bitmap, which will then be put into NSImage.

What is a good approach for this in Objective-C / Cocoa?
