How to force the forced closure of a separate application on the actual Apple Watch (not in simulators)?

When developing an application, it is sometimes useful to force an application to close without restarting the entire device.

On my iPhone, I can force exit the active application by double-clicking the Home button and moving the application up.

For the actual Apple Watch (and not for simulators), forcibly disabling the application is especially useful, as sometimes there are connection problems between the Xcode and the clock application. Also, sometimes I would like to force exit the Apple Watch app when it is not connected to Xcode.

So, how can I force close / close the active application on the Apple Watch without restarting the entire device?

When the application you want to complete is open:

  • Press and hold the side button and wait for the shutdown screen to appear. Then release the side button.
  • Press and hold the side button again until the main screen appears.

Your previous active application is now complete.

PS: The side button is the button under the digital crown.
