Can Google App apps use beta apps outside the app store?

The title pretty much sums it up. Can a Google app use a beta application that is not already in the play store?

Yes, the Invites app can be used with the Alpha and Beta releases published on Google Play. The link to the alpha beta build is the same as the release. Users will need to add to the closed alpha beta or add themselves to the open alpha beta before the link works.
