Can you exclude reverse navigation properties in EF with active loading?

When I use .Include syntax in EF6, reverse navigation properties are always loaded. Is there any way to disable this? Here is an example request.

private static IQueryable<Account> GetAccountsEager(this IRepository<Account> repository) { return repository .Queryable() .Include(e => e.AccountLocations .Select(l => l.Address.City.State.Country)); }

This gives me an AccountLocations account. However, the address "city" has this reverse navigation property:

 public virtual ICollection<Address> Addresses { get; set; }

.. so it loads all the return navigation addresses to provide me with much more data than I want in the request. Can I turn off reverse navigation?

I would just remove the reverse navigation property from the object, but in other cases I really want to look back to get addresses from the city.

Thanks.

Change 1:
I just noticed something strange here. This does NOT load the city’s return navigation addresses:

 return repository.Queryable() .Include(e => e.BillToAddress.AddressType) .Include(e => e.BillToAddress.City.State.Country);

However, if I add include, like this:

 return repository.Queryable() .Include(e => e.BillToAddress.AddressType) .Include(e => e.BillToAddress.City.State.Country); .Include(e => e.AccountLocations.Select(a => a.Address.City.State.Country));

Then, reverse navigation addresses are downloaded for BOTH e.BillToAddress.City and each AccountLocation Address.City. Why add. Select on the third enable effect of the second enable?

Here is the SQL:

 exec sp_executesql N'SELECT //removing [ProjectX].[Property] AS [Property] for brevity //essentially a line for each property of the syntax above... FROM ( SELECT [Limit1].[AccountId] AS [AccountId], [Limit1].[AccountNumber] AS [AccountNumber], [Limit1].[Name] AS [Name], [Limit1].[Attention] AS [Attention], [Limit1].[BillToAddressId] AS I think you see the result of a “fix relationship”:

Locking relationships ensures that related objects are automatically connected when the second object enters the ObjectContext.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/alexj/archive/2009/10/13/tip-37-how-to-do-a-conditional-include.aspx

In your case, since you include AccountLocation.Address.City , EF loads the related Address objects and the associated City tags that you requested, as well as part of the “fix,” adding the loaded Address that will be part of the CityAddress relationship “one to many "to the City.Addresses navigation City.Addresses .

You can find another example in this link . As in your case, lazy loading and creating a proxy server have also been disabled, however this link does not include a way to disable this behavior.

Is it possible to exclude reverse navigation properties in EF at boot time?

No.

As explained in another answer, EF has this relationship fixing process that brings together all the objects that it has loaded into the context. You cannot stop this process in any way. Therefore, if you do not take things into your own hands, you will always have this bloated Json string. (I cannot explain and reproduce the intolerable download differences that you seem to find, but they should be the subject of a new question. I will not expect them to always happen, hoping that they will solve your current problem).

So, the key is here: take control. It depends on your situation, which is the best strategy, but there are several options.

  • Request the request in an anonymous type and serialize it in JSON. Just a minimal example:

     repository.Queryable() .Select(e => new { Account = e.Name, AccountLocations = e.AccountLocations .Select(l => new { Address = new { l.Address.Street, l.Address.Number }, City = l.Address.City.Name, Country = l.Address.City.Country.Name, }) });

    Some people will be unhappy with returning anonymous types from a method, even if it is in JSON, but for me it is just a method that returns JSON in some desired format. It only brings the world of untyped JavaScript one step closer.

  • Do the same with the structure of named types (DTO, or view model, types.

  • Create a highlighted context without bidirectional associations. This is an option that is often forgotten, but why should there always be one context with which you access your data? Just make sure that the classes used (or generated) by the context have different names than those that belong to the main context.

By the way, by doing this, you can also adapt the amount of data that you retrieve from the database to what you need for serialization.
