Check out cOOol . You can use this instead of creating a macro, or borrow some concepts from the code.
Testing links (possibly with .uno:JumpToMark ) doesn't seem like it would be useful, because internal links always go somewhere, even if the target doesn't exist. Instead, create a list of acceptable goals, as you suggested.
To maintain a list of valid goals, cOOOL code uses the Python suite. If you want to use Basic, then data structures will be more limited. However, this can be done either by declaring a new object collection or using main arrays, possibly with ReDim .
Also see how cOOOL code defines valid target lines. For instance:

Now it checks the numbering of the contours. Maybe it is too strict - perhaps it would be nice to be able to disable the number check.
As for question 3, this code now opens the correct links for editing (while “Yes” is clicked in the message box).
