Modern (.NET 4.5.2) C # Joystick Capture Method? DirectInput or HID or something else?

I have a hard search for up-to-date C # information for writing joystick data in VS 2015. All the examples that I see use an outdated DirectInput or some third-party application (SlimDX) that has not been updated from what I can say since 2012. What is the current modern way to get basic joystick input in C #?
