Matplotlib window freeze / freeze on close in ipython with OS X

Question

This problem has affected everyone I work with, updated to the latest latest versions. This only affects ipython graphics. The regular python terminal is not affected by this problem.

Play

 import matplotlib.pyplot as plt plt.plot() # manually close the window with `x` 

Trying plt.close() also disables three OS X built-in buttons
