Check with your developer to make sure Simulator works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.

I installed Xcode version 7.3.1 and OSX -10.11.5, and there are no updates available.

I got the same error message on macOS 10.12.6 with Xcode 9.0 when trying to run Simulator directly without opening Xcode, i.e. by clicking the simulator icon that was dragged to the dock. simulator dock icon

The solution was to open Xcode from the launchpad. He then introduced a dialog box saying that additional components needed to be installed. After the installation is complete, the Simulator application can be launched without errors.

I ran into the same error and found that the Simulator application that I was trying to open directly in the My Applications folder was an old version, but a newer version was sitting inside / Applications / Xcode.app / Contents / Developer / Applications /

You may need to open Xcode and complete any relevant requests.

Sometimes, when there is an Xcode update, some functions stop working until you return there and go through several windows, etc.
