Is MonoRail Ready for Productive Use?

Now I'm not sure ...

I would say yes. I use it. I know that Universal uses it on some of its (thousands) sites. However, I will add some caveats:

  • There are serious tuning issues, especially if you want to debug libraries.
  • Helper functions support the prototype, unlike the more modern jQuery. However, this is changing rapidly.
  • The documentation is a bit chaotic, again the Castle team is working on it.

I cannot guarantee that every last function "out there" works, but the point of the system should actually be simple.

Compared to vanilla, ASP.NET is an absolute joy. I assure you that you will not miss the viewing.

Over the past year and a half, we have built a fairly large application. It was nice not to deal with the old ASP / page model and use the best Model / View / Controller design sample.

To get new material, you really need to work with the development trunk because they do not release very often. We have many tests that take the framework, so when an update in the structure violates what we depend on, we know about it immediately.

If you need to work in .NET, this will save you from alternatives.

The monorail forum has a review: http://forum.castleproject.org/viewforum.php?f=6

I use it for an application and did not have any big problems with it. The biggest problem is finding good documentation and examples.

I had no problems with the setup. Julian, I don’t think it’s constructive to say things like “serious problems” without any further explanation or examples.

Debugging in libraries is trivial. Since it is open source, you can debug it all.

I have been using MonoRail for production for many centuries in many projects, both as an employee, as an indie contractor, and for non-work sites.

I know that I am inclined to this, but I can sincerely promise that my positive experience of use is what lured me to help the project, and not vice versa.
