I have a page layout, PeopleSearchResults.aspx, programmed by someone else. It contains the following tag for SharePoint refining the control of user search results .

Title="<%$Resources:sps,RefineByTitle%>"

The sps.resx file you define is actually located in 12 \ CONFIG \ Resources (but there is another group of 12 \ Resources).

Where is the SharePoint resource string located.

Support resources are located at 12 hive in. \ 12 \ Resources.

The 12 Hive is the directory most commonly found in: C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ web server extensions \ 12.

So, to answer your question, if your sharepoint installation is located on drive C, look in the folder C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ web server extensions \ 12 \ Resources .

= "<% $ Resources: SPS, RefineByTitle%>"

sps (.resx) is the name of the resource file in 12 \ Resources (there may be several with extra bits, such as .en-us.resx, fr-fr.resx, etc., if you have several languages supported) and RefineByTitle is the language entry key in this file.

Also, check out the App_GlobalResources folder for your website. (defined by IIS manager)
