The future of Internet Explorer

IE8 is rumored to be the final IE version for Microsoft (when I asked this question , someone pointed me to an article about Slashdot - Yes, I know this is Slashdot, but he cited an article about InfoWorld - in any case, there seems to be some legitimate concerns regarding continued support for IE IE, at least in its current form). What are their future plans for the HTML rendering engine?

Microsoft, apparently, is not making much progress to make the current Trident engine compatible with CSS3, so I just wondered instead they are replacing it with the next generation engine (I heard the code name "Triton" "instead) or abandon it in favor of a competing platform (e.g. WebKit, as Reed Kopsy points out in his answer).

Why aggressive downvoting? This is a legitimate issue for anyone planning to use IE as a built-in control.

The two most common specs I've seen are that the rendering engine will be replaced with something based on Gazelle or Webkit. Personally, I think that Gazelle is a much more likely opportunity.

I believe that I do not think that IE 8 will be the latest version of IE - I think it is more likely that it can be the last to be released from IE using the current code rendering engine and basic analysis procedures. I would suspect that MS would rewrite their internals, but I very much doubt that Internet Explorer is about to leave while Microsoft is still writing software.
