The best language or program for finding patterns and statistical analysis?

I have a program that downloads the main historical stock data from yahoo and puts it in a SQLite database. I would like to be able to fulfill requests, such as searching for a moving average, and determining the longest period when stocks either continued to go up or down. I could write perl functions to do this, but that seems redundant since Perl is not intended for statistics. Which language or program is best suited for these tasks?

Take a look at R Language - it is free, it is designed to create statistics and has an ODBC module that allows you to access SQLite.

R is awesome. It will take some time to get used to it and learn how to use it, but the number of modules and functionality that it provides makes it, by far, the best statistical program available for free.

While R is good if you want a quick start or proof of concept, try Weka . It says that it has an intuitive graphical interface. Despite the fact that this is not entirely true from my experience, it is still faster than getting into R

I heard that r is a pretty good language for these things. I have not used it personally, so I cannot give you any good resources or anything else. But I would say it is worth mentioning.

You might want to consider a more mathematical approach (rather than a software one), such as using Mathematica or another CAS. Mathematica can load your SQL table, and you can perform a wide range of analyzes using all the mathematical tools you can dream of. And of course, Mathematica has a strict functional language that you can use!

What about statistics :: Descriptive or Math :: Business :: SMA perlmods? If you already know Perl, it's probably faster to find what you need on CPAN than to learn R.

This tool is not free, but worth a look: http://www.tableausoftware.com/
