Can we update the icon in the iPhone SDK 3.0, how does the calendar application do it?

On iPhone and iPod Touch, the calendar app changes the icon for the day to display today's date. I used the support case with Apple to figure out how to do this in 2.x, but they say you cannot.

Has anyone found an API in the new SDK for iPhone 3.0 that allows this?

Not displayed like this:

You cannot change anything in your application bundle, and this includes the icon using the SDK.

Although several people have some possible hack ideas.
