Excel Comments - Maximum Length 2003

Does anyone know what is the limit for comments in an Excel (2003) cell? I programmatically populate this and want me not to exceed the limit.

This page contains a list of all Excel specifications and limitations.

Not sure about the comments, but it looks like these cells are limited to 32767 characters. Also not sure about character encoding or if that matters.

I looked at the BIFF specification for NOTES (which are actually comments on cells), and there is no limit in itself, only 2048 per NOTES record, but you can have as many of them as you want, they are marked as continuation entries past the first. With that in mind, it seems limitless.

However, to be safe, I am cutting mine at 15,000 (since we don't need more than 1,000 for what we do).

I just tried to try by posting a big comment programmatically.

And I ended up with the result: 22877 characters. However, I'm not sure if character encoding matters.

According to "Excel Specifications and Limitations," the maximum number of characters is 32,767 (a total of 1,024 displays per cell).

I suspect characters in the assumption that no character ever takes more than two bytes ...
