What is recommended for traffic tracking for my asp.net application

I have an asp.net 3.5 application hosted on IIS 7.0. I am looking for a comprehensive traffic monitoring system, down to the minimum page level. Does .net have any specific tools or is it better to write my own or which systems / software are freely available for use

thanks

Use Google Analytics . Its a small piece of Javascript code that is inserted before the tag. It is based on Urchin analytics tracking software, which Google bought. They have been doing this for a long time.

As long as your site links to a fully functional domain name, Google Analytics can track what you need. It also gained more flexibility with a filtering mechanism (let you rewrite URLs based on query string parameters, etc.)

LOTS functionality and well-designed, as well as a good API, if you need to track events other than clicks.

If you have access to IIS logs, you can use the log analyzer to interpret the data. An example is the free AWStats analyzer:

http://awstats.sourceforge.net/

An alternative (and I recommend) is Google Analytics ( http://www.google.com/analytics ). It depends on how you embed a small piece of Javascript on every page that you want to track, and then Google grumbles for you, presenting the results on an attractive Flash-rich site.

I suggest trying both and see what suits your needs. I would definitely recommend against your own system, as the above solutions are very mature and capable. Good luck

You will need a client-side tracking / javascript tracking service (for example, Google Analytics, but there are other good free alternatives), because it runs even when the user clicks the back button and the previous page (on your website) is loaded from the browserโ€™s cache, not from the server. IIS will not โ€œseeโ€ the reboot because the request for it is not being executed.
