How to convert website for iPhone / iPod?

If a client provides you with a website and then says that you are converting this design to an iPhone compatible and user-friendly website, what points do you care about when converting or optimizing for iPhone.

Basically you have two options:

  • Do not optimize. Safari for iPhone is very capable of displaying full-featured websites. (Just do not use Flash)
  • Full redesign and creation of a mini-site with a fixed width of 320 pixels.

I would choose option 1. As the owner of the iPhone, it bothers me when some sites automatically link to the β€œiPhone” version.

If you use a browser on iPhone / iTouch, you may be interested in a manual media type . You can use this to specify a CSS stylesheet for mobile / handheld devices.

A List Apart has a good tutorial on this , as well as Horror Coding .

As already mentioned, iPhone Safari displays the site very well. However, sites optimized or at least designed for 800x600 or more are not displayed at 320x356 in the iphone viewer. Lots of detail has been lost, and clicking on the links may be high and skip.

The best approach is to rewrite the main pages with a view of the iPhone in mind and only put the essential elements.

iPhone can be detected as follows:

$browser = strpos($_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'],"iPhone"); if ($browser == true) { echo 'Code You Want To Execute'; } else{echo 'just carry on';}

And then the pages should be built by analyzing the basic elements of the website that the user might want when viewing on a device with a smaller form factor. Of course, links to the full site.

Apple can make recommendations for this, and of course, eBay has done some work that you can see by browsing there. In a short place here, I can’t talk in more detail about how you do this redesign, but about discussing it, analyzing the use of the site and communicating with users or site owners.
