Is it safe to uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express installed by Visual Studio 2008 when installing SQL Server 2008?

Or will everything explode and kill a couple of kittens?

That's right. The motors are isolated from each other, so you can run both in parallel or remove / remove components if you need to.

Hope this helps!

It should be safe.

We had problems with: if we install SQL Express first, then the management console will not be installed during the installation of SQL Server.

I had kitten parts splattered all over when I tried to do exactly what you are asking for. Therefore, I completely burned it and reinstalled it, first installing SQL Server 2008, and then making sure to remove the database components in Visual Studio installations.

So far, so good, but my SQL Server installation is being used sparingly.
