Source Hosting Control?

I am working on several closed, historical projects. (Small ones.) I do not want to share the code for these projects. But I want to have an easy to install version control system that is easy to install on my website.

I do not have administrator rights on this web hosting, so I can’t just run setup.exe on the remote system. Basically, the only way to install something is to simply create a database and copy the files to the server, and possibly a little more, using the Plesk control panel.

I can choose between two hosts: one with Linux with MySQL and the other with Windows 2008 / IIS7 with SQL Server 2005. I have a preference for my Windows host because it provides the most disk space.

So what are my options? (It’s not necessary to be free, although I have a limited budget.)

I can have physical access to both nodes to install some additional software, but this means that you will travel about 5,000 km to the server room. I can also tell someone at the server installation location to install it for me, but it's quite expensive. I could just find another company to host this for me, but I like my current servers / hosts. So I'm looking for a solution that I can just upload to the server.

I run Subversion on Dreamhost for less than $ 10 a month. Until now, most of my projects are quite small - I know that they do not always appreciate large amounts of data as repositories inaccessible to websites. This is the first web host, not the host file. However, it’s pretty easy to configure SVN repositories in your admin interface, and then you have a simple svn + ssh connection.

Of course, since this is a web host, it’s easy to install Trac (they even have a 1-click installation for it) or some other software product.

I would highly recommend Assembla and Unfuddle . They offer various types of version control (SVN, GIT, etc.), as well as ticket management, messaging between teams, wikis and many other tools that I have not yet received.

I use Assembla and find it very intuitive and offers great features such as automatic integration between the ticketing system and the version control system. I am using the free version and just hope that no one is scanning / stealing my code until this particular project comes to the point that I should think about paying a small fee to protect it :)
