What are the best free options I can use to emulate a printer? I use GDI + on Windows, but platform-specific features like PDF writers are more than welcome.
I know a good pdf printer used for many years: CutePDF and it's free :)
I would use at least one PDF printer, and if you have the latest MS Office installed, you probably already have an XPS printer. Otherwise, locate the XPS package at Microsoft.

PDF Creator is good (as well as open source).
It creates a virtual printer and prints PDF files through Ghostscript.
