Installing a Security Update for Visual Studio 2008 Problem KB 971092

Just noticed - today I was in the cycle of downloading KB971092 and installing with a reboot.

7 times - file 350 Mb. FSK!

Applies to: Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (KB971092) Symptoms: The update will install successfully, but Windows Update will be updated as a new update. This can be repeated endlessly. or the offline installer tells you that this update is โ€œnot applied or blocked by another condition on your system.โ€

  • Download a standalone version. VS90SP1-KB971092-x86.exe
  • Run the installation of VS90SP1-KB971092-x86.exe
  • Wait until the error message appears - do not close the window
  • Copy temp. where the patch was unpacked into a new folder, for example, on your desktop.
  • Close VS90SP1-KB971092-x86.exe, which you started in step 2.
  • Go to {Program Files} \ Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0 \ Common7 \ Tools and find vsvars32.bat.
  • Change the permissions for the file so that everyone can edit it.
  • Run VS90SP1-KB971092-x86.msp from the saved folder and the process should complete.
  • You may want to grant the reset permissions that you specified in step 7.

KB971092 was reissued on August 3 to fix this problem. There is no need to perform a workaround.

I had the same error with Windows 10 Technical Preview 9879. I downloaded a separate update from Microsoft and ran it. This installation required the installation of my VS2008 ISO (using Virtual Clone Drive), and it was installed just fine.
