Cool WebGL apps?

In recent SIGGRAPH 2009, there was a WebGL ad - an OpenGL ES port for javascript.

The application that immediately crossed my mind is 3D first-person shooters on the Internet with AJAX as the basis for communication.
I think this has the potential to meet the long-awaited promise made by VRML a long time ago ...
Can you come up with any other interesting applications for this technology?

3D Google Maps in a browser with real-time navigation using location information.

3D How to find us.

3D Bar Charts in online technology reviews.

Cross-platform 3D role-playing games because WebGL will be slower due to Javascript and probably not suitable for high frame rate games with high frame rate. Well, not in the next couple of years.

Um ... this is about it.

I can recall a few more, considering how it will be available in any browser.

  • 3D viewing of products in online magazines and stores.
  • 3D graphics (for example, topics of forum posts for monitoring or something else)
  • who are currently running in flash memory.
  • games such as pool and billiards.

There are probably many other ideas, but I'm fresh.

I think this will set a new standard for Web Maps. Imagine a real 3D street view of Google, it will be more pleasant and easy.

Game developers can use maps, weapons, and character models on their sites, not just screenshots, concept art, and video. This would be a good addition to the selection of the product.

I also see the possibility that people can record a game where it makes an explored 3D scene of a previously played match. This is already happening in Halo 3 and a few other names, but now we can share content on the Internet so that everyone can see.

People can also create 3D avatars (and no, I don't mean the little people who walk). Forums use animated GIFs and animated PNGs, which are often simple logos or symbols. Any video or animated image of a simple symbol or logo uses more data than an animated 3D object of the same thing (in most cases).

Last but not least, the creation of all 3D web pages. PHPBB could make it so that threads can be moved using the arrow keys or the mouse as you floated around the forum as a landscape. A forum can have rings of threads and for each thread with LARGE threads, more rings. Then, when you go to messages, you can click to load the previous page or the next page, and it will expand as a scroll.

I hope I have not confused anyone with the last two paragraphs (from time to time I confuse people). If you need explanations and sketches, write me an email: alexgoven@gmail.com.

I expect that there will be many wonderful things that we never thought before. This is not always about improving web functionality. Even feeling and navigation can go beyond our simple fantasies.

Here is my 3D map based on WebGL. I just got the blue marble tiles working today.

Here is a live demo. Scaling with the mouse wheel works, but dragging to rotate is currently interrupted.

3D Earthquake Visualization is the most useful and interesting WebGL demo I've seen.
