The problem of choosing a comet server

I want to write a php site that uses comet technology for real-time updates.

I have a few questions:

  • Is it better to use a comet server? Which comet server is good?

  • For a comet server (like an orbital server), I must first install the pif-based orbital server and then write a php file to create a socket to connect to the comet server. Right? (Orbited.org has no tutorial about this.)

Depending on your needs, you can check WebSync OnDemand - it works well for PHP applications, and hosting is offloaded. If you are looking for only a few users (<= 10), it is also free.

The orbital PHP client can be found on the download page.

Currently there are many solutions for the comet. Server: CometD contains a comet implementation for the client (JavaScript library) and for the Jetty-based server. Another good option is to combine Atmosphere with Tomcat, Jetty, GlassFish, Weblogic, Grizzly, JBossWeb and JBoss, resin, etc. Another comet implementation comes from APE: see Ape-project.org. If you want to implement your solution (serveride and clientside) onyl using web server support, you can choose between the just named web servers, but probably you need spend a lot of effort.
