Should I upgrade to Windows 7 for initial development?

Is it time to upgrade to Win7 for the main developer? I mainly deal with maven, eclipse, eclipse derivatives, VMWare workstation, virtual boxes and other dev-centric tools. I switched with caution, but do I have msdn access to the RTM release and am thinking of updating? What are your problems for Windows 7? You have not switched? What are the pros and cons?

If you are running Vista, yes. If you are still using XP, stick with this until at least the first few months have passed and they will work out most of the potentially major unidentified problems with 7 (there are always some hidden surprises in the first few months after the OS is released).

I switched and I would recommend it. Like everyone else, I’m sure there will be several errors, but I ran the 1st one on RC, and now on RTM and haven’t hit it yet. Thanks to increased performance compared to Vista, security compared to XP, and the ease of use of any previous Windows OS, I would have done it.

I would say that it depends on two factors:

  • Are there necessary tools available only in Windows 7, or whose performance has been improved in Windows 7? Your answer to this may depend on whether you are currently in XP or Vista.
  • How quickly do you expect your client base to switch to Windows 7 and move away from other versions of Windows?

If you cannot make good business code for the switch, I would wait.

I am using Win7 with beta and have no problems with eclipse or vmware. You can try it on vmware with the programs you use to make sure you have no other problems, but so far my experience has been excellent.

Win7 is basically Vista with a significant kernel update; the driver base is the same as the other main parts ...

So the answer depends on what you have used so far ...
