Opening links in the same window or in a new (tab)

It’s best to open links in one window. Should this be the rule when most regular browsers use tabs? Personally, I prefer to close the tab / window above clicking on the stand. What are your thoughts?

If you prefer to close the tab / window by clicking the "Back" button, then by all means, click the link with the middle mouse button. But please do not force your surfing preferences to others. Tabs do not alter this principle in the least.

I think consistency is the most important thing to remember. Browsers are starting to offer ways to open links on multiple tabs regardless of website development decisions, so supporting such features, like other websites, is perhaps the biggest problem.

You really want your main functions of your site to behave like other sites that your users visit, so they feel comfortable and do not waste time trying to figure out the differences.

However, there are times when you must open a new window / tab or open a link in the current window / tab. For example, if two pages (current and linked page) really need to be viewed at the same time).

Yes, it must be the same thing. The new tab is more or less a new window; it is simply stored in the same parent container as the original tab.

Are we discussing links leaving your site? Our company service provider has a website to administer our flexible costs. It opens 3 separate windows from the moment you log in, until I get to the page to apply. I have never been a fan of opening a new tab / window when navigating a site.

Some browsers actually open a new window when asked to open a new window (sigh) , even if they support tabs . Usually I have two or three different browser windows open, each of which has several tabs grouped by task. If a site unexpectedly forces me to redraw a new window, now I need to re-integrate it as a tab into one of my open windows if I want to save my task group. This is a serious annoyance.

If I want to open something in a new tab, I can do it myself, thank you very much. Do not try to think about the user. The only time I can accept / wait for a new window is when the source site should remain open, for example, because I entered text in the form, but I need to open the "more information" window (see "Help Help" StackOverflow Help ") .

I am going to erase the scroll wheel button by the number of tabs that I open. There's a big Firefox extension that allows you to close the current tab with the click of a button, and I assigned it, so it’s very easy to quickly close the tabs.

I think that it is still in the sphere of personal preferences, but depending on what I look at, I more and more find that I open links on new tabs. I do this a lot when I read a page with a lot of related links, but first I want to finish reading the main page. Thus, when I am done, I can look at all these links, and not try to return using the "Back" button.
