Is Sharepoint Server required for Excel Services or Excel Web Access

Excel and Excel Web Access come with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. I wonder if Excel Services or any component of this technology can be used without using Sharepoint.

Thanks in advance! - phi

They are available only through SharePoint 2007 and do not exist as stand-alone products. Microsoft is pushing MOSS as a platform for most of the products they ship online, so I would be very surprised to see any of these ships independently.

SpreadsheetGear for .NET will do many of the things that Excel Services does, and also includes some features that you cannot get with Excel Services. SpreadsheetGear 2009 works with ASP.NET 2.0+. You can see some ASP.NET examples here and download a free trial here .

You did not specify a feature, but some of the features available in Excel Services are now available through SkyDrive .

The Excel Computing Services protocol is also described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh633051(v=office.12).aspx if you want to write your own protocol client.
