Why is SQL Server Compact Edition missing from the list of server types in SQL Server Management Studio 2008?

I have both SQL Server Compact 3.5 Service Pack 1 and SQL Server Management Studio 2008 (SSMS) installed on my PC. Previously, I was able to select "SQL Server Compact Edition" from the "Server Types" list in the "Connect to Server" dialog box in SSMS. This entry is missing, and I could not restore it.

There are apparently two ways this can happen.

  • "SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Query Tools" has been removed.
  • The Restore option was selected during the installation of SQL Server 2008. For more information, see "Integrating SQL Server Management Studio 2008" here.

A solution to both of these is to reinstall SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Query Tools. The installation package is called "SSCESqlWbTools" and can be found either on the SQL Server 2008 installation media or in the Microsoft Download Center .
