ASP.NET MVC recommends UpdateModel

In ASP.NET MVC, UpdateModel is terribly convenient if not too black a box. One of the main reasons I use ASP.NET MVC, however, is for the insane amount of control that I compare with ASP.NET, so from an ideological point of view, the black box part bothers me a bit.

Is using UpdateModel recommended? It was used in the (original) canonical Nerd Dinner, so he obviously somewhat favored the credentials that were, but I doubt the last word.

Given the code you will need to write to update the model object (boring and repetitive). I am glad that they include this feature. Since he gives you control over which members to allow and which not, his vote got my vote. Great feature !!!
