Standard gateways will accept message requests via email, webmail, or a full web service. Depending on the gateway service, it may offer one, several or all of these parameters.
Back in the "old days" when I started receiving mobile SMS, in the UK, at least, you could also use a dial-up modem to dial a specific network number and enter an SMS message. If this is still available in the area you are looking for, then the advantage of this is not setting up an account, since it is charged to your phone bill.
