PHPMyAdmin complains that "mcrypt" is not available - is it bothering me?

I installed PHPMyAdmin on a Mac and complain that it cannot load mcrypt functions. Obviously, installing a PHP package on a Mac does not have it.

Can anyone tell me what the consequences are? Neither the PHPMyAdmin document nor the PHP documentation seem to tell me which problem, if any, will cause me.

This, by the way, is a local, personal database. Not production, never will be.

http://www.phpmyadmin.net/documentation/ says:

When using the cookie authentication method, the extension for mcrypt is highly recommended to most users and is required for 64-bit machines. Not using mcrypt will cause phpMyAdmin to load pages much slower.
