What are the differences between the image of GD and GD2?

Reading the documentation for imagegd2 () and imagegd () , I noticed that the functions are described accordingly:

What is a GD2 and a GD image? What is the difference between these types of images?

gd is the old c library, gd2 is updated. php uses gd2.

In some version of GD, only PNG is generated, but the latest version can transfer GIFs and PNGs. Soon GD 1 will no longer be supported in the next version of PHP.
