Create a New Drupal Website Using D7

I plan to rebuild the site that I have, from self-destruction to Drupal. I plan to dive into Drupal and then work as a freelancer (using Drupal).

And here is my question. After spending some time reading and testing Drupal, I really got that feeling, “WOW”, with Drupal7! I know that the D7 has not yet come out, but it seems to be very different from the D6.

What I would like to ask is that if this is normal, start using D7 now or I have to wait. My site is more like a personal site, so not many users will do anything other than reading.

I really don’t feel that I want to build my site using D6 and then hack to update all this later. For example, some of the modules I'm going to use are part of the kernel in D7 bu, not in D6, so I feel this will be a problem.

What do you think?

PS Please be patient in my grammar, I'm a guy (Swedish);)

For a new personal site, I would say go for D7. Now D7 is much more mature than D6 when it was launched. Many of the popular modules are in the process of porting, and there are <40 critical errors left.

Most of the more complex bugs were in the transition from D6, not D7 functionality.

Why not try Drupal Gardens first. It is organized by Aquia, which is the company that deals with the guy who started Drupal, they think the D7 is fine. (Using your own dog food).

Go to the water!
Use Drupal because its possibilities are really unlimited and the community is strong and fast.
Which version?
I believe it will take some time until most sites, modules, themes and developers go to 7. Although the transition from 5 to 6 was (at least for me) incredibly fast, I feel that Drupal as a whole is currently much more, and going from 6 to 7 will take longer.

So it depends on what you want to achieve -

  • Starting with 7 will now mean that you will lead, but that will mean that you cannot use all existing modules, etc. This will give you a good start, but it will not be very useful for your customers / users.
  • Starting at 6 will mean a much stronger base, but ultimately 7 training and, possibly, updating will be required.

My bottom line is 6, so you can start right away.
As I can see, 6 will not disappear very quickly.

Good luck

Drupal Gardens is a regular Drupal 7 like SaaS and much more - see this FAQ for Drupal Gardens adding Drupal 7 . The best part is based on OpenSaaS, which means that you can export the site database, files and source code at any time and place it yourself if you ever outgrow Drupal Gardens.

NO WAY!

We're talking about non-release alpha

They are still an important security issue with the D7.

If this is a personal blog for you, why not forget about a serious website.
