Computer science as a public service

Today I met Ushahidi , and it made me think about various community software projects. What other software projects are there for the community, whether they are websites (like Ushahidi) or not?

Please note: I’m not talking about open source on its own, although I assume that most community-based software services will be open source, I really aim to β€œhelp projects with a lower standard of living” more.

Is anyone

FSF Award for Social Benefit Projects. Not all projects are necessarily software projects, but some of them. They awarded Wikipedia, Sahana, Groclaw, Creative Commons and the Internet Archive.

Probably Sahana is closest to what you are looking for. It is a system for coordinating disaster relief. It was originally designed for the tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2004.

Community service projects offer people the opportunity to give something to their communities. Through community services, groups and individuals can participate in projects.

The Apache Software Foundation (1991) is also a community project. Also, JBoss (Java) is a software community. And both of these projects are open source projects.
