In computing, Bonjour (formerly Rendezvous 1 ) is a trademark of Apple Inc. for its implementation of the Zeroconf service discovery protocol. Bonjour locates devices, such as printers, other computers, and services offered by these devices on the local network, using the domain name multicast service records .

Mac (OSX 10.4+) installs with dns-ds , which is

Zero-configuration network (zeroconf) is a set of methods that automatically create a useful Internet Protocol (IP) network without manual intervention or special configuration servers. A zero-configuration network allows users with unlimited access to connect computers, network printers, and other network devices and expect a functioning network to be created automatically. Without zeroconf, the user must either configure special services, such as DHCP and Domain Name Services (DNS), or configure the settings for each computer network manually, which can be difficult or impossible for non-technical or novice users.
