Which non-standard ports are safe to use?

I am using a non-standard port for admin controls, and I am wondering if I need any specific port that I should use, or is it safe to use any port for which there is no script assigned to it

In short, anything above 1024 is “safe” if I understand your definition of safe. Although, I can, of course, check all the ports on your box.

My impression (please correct if I'm wrong), but most people scanning boxes are usually not higher than 1024 for large-scale scanning. They can check all ports if this is a field of particular interest to them.

Perhaps explain your situation a little more and what is the desired end result, and we can formulate a plan for you.

Here is a list of commonly used port numbers: http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers I would say to avoid those on this list.
