Link to Magento Links

Question

what's the best way to link to an image from a .phtml file in Magento. I am trying to insert an image (sitting in the "images" folder) in footer.phtml and

{{skin url='images/image.gif'}} 

doesn't seem to work. any ideas?

If you link to the folder with images in the folder of your skin, you can use Mage::getDesign()->getSkinUrl('images/image.gif') .
