Web Applications: The Death of Long URLs?

If you use the full SEO URL, for example http://example.com/talks/about/star-wars , then you can expect your URL to be eaten up by users who send its .ly bit and others.

So my question is: would it be better to create your own shortener for links and just ignore any advantage of SEO keyword URLs in exchange for juice link for SEO from a direct URL? For example, something like this that is actually close to the corresponding abridged version?

 http://example.com/dE http://bit.ly/clPeI1

Stop link rot more than urls?

If so, should we start developing our application URL structure with this in mind?

Great question.

If you have the skills and resources, you can create your own shortcut and make sure that you redirect 301 from a short URL to a long SEO-oriented URL. Thus, you get the best of both worlds.

So:

  • Your brand name is not "eaten up" bit by bit and by friends.
  • your urls will continue to work when the Beatles and friends die
  • you control your urls, traffic and redirects
  • you get all link juice from short to long due to 301

If you do, you will encourage people to use abbreviated URLs that do not use them today.

However, if you forget this little problem, tweeters will continue to use bit.ly (because there is some value when using bit.ly). But you do not care, because it is just high-frequency ... after all.

Maintain your friendly URLs and don't worry about bit.ly.

For your SEO efforts, it is important that your URLs contain keywords related to your content.
