Opening Socket.IO connection in google chrome extension

I am trying to figure out how to open a connection to an external Socket.IO server every time a user visits a new page with the google chrome extension. This is my first extension, so it's a little complicated.

I tried using the iframe and the history.onVisit event, but so far no luck.

After some research, I realized that Socket.IO does not currently support cross-site connections. So the idea.

socket.io supports cross-site connections using jsonp polling now or is it a new feature?
